[another afternoon at the beach]

they say you should just absolutely give up hope of taking pictures in full mid-day sunlight. they say you must find a shady spot or wait until the light is less harsh. they say that you really should be super-cautious with that big fancy camera on the sand, because even one speck of sand could break the whole thing.

i say that i’d rather work my schedule around avoiding the traffic jam and just deal with the light as it is when i get there. i say that i’ve got to take pictures no matter how bright or how windy, and the camera is useless if i’m not taking pictures. i say that i’m so glad i’m old enough and cantankerous enough and stubborn enough to really not care what they say; really, i’m so grateful for that. today’s beach was a perfect little spot for an impromptu getaway (it was impromptu because i didn’t quite realize until the last minute that emma didn’t have school today, and once i realized it, i couldn’t sit still). it was just dune-y enough, just empty enough, just windy enough, just close enough.

we ate white castle burgers for lunch, i wore a big white flower in my hair, she wore a fluffy pettiskirt with her pirate shirt as she ran around and built a “volcano-pile” and buried my feet in the sand, then pretended to plant a very large garden of vegetables and butterflies. we sang along to vampire weekend and the beatles’ white album all the way home (em plays air-drums in both bands), and stayed in the car 10 minutes after we found a parking spot, listening to REM (with the volume way loud). these are the days i’d like to remember forever.
