a few weeks ago, we had an absolutely spontaneous saturday; old friends were in the city and after a hearty brunch we found ourselves literally at the doorstep of St. John the Divine, the largest cathedral in the world. for much of the time i’ve lived in The City, St. John’s has been covered with scaffolding, under construction and damaged by fire. it was unexpected and moving to find ourselves in this beautiful place, lighting candles for loved ones and reflecting on our own spirituality and the power of beauty, scale, and quiet. the idea that a such a grand institution is brave enough to create space for intellectual pursuit, socially relevant issues, beautiful music, and exploration of “the wonder and mystery of existence” is inspiring to me.
